Data modellers face major challenges to add value in the modern enterprise:

1. ERP and packaged software comes with its own model built in
   

2. Every system and piece of software has its own meta data
   

3. Definitions are often “buried” in system configuration parameters
   

4. Business people have no time or inclination to get involved with data models...
   

5. ...so have their own spreadsheet based systems that are inconsistent with everything else!
   

Which leaves the modeller in the middle of a spaghetti bowl of definitions and poorly controlled data.

There is some light on the horizon however.  Business people DO want the right data on their reports, and are increasingly pressed to conform to a corporate standard for information sharing.  Data models are a cornerstone to data governance and the drive for consistent reliable business intelligence.
