Communicating with data models

Free video training

The videos below are aimed at data modellers.  They explain how to take existing data models and use them to communicate effectively with business people.

The training available below is free of charge.  Please let us know whether you found it useful, or whether you think it could be improved.  If there is sufficient interest in additional topics we will consider developing further modules to address them.

I would like to acknowledge Kalido (www.kalido.com) for the use of their free modelling tool and Richard Barker for inventing the reading technique for communicating models to business people

Sets a background for using data models as a communication aid.  Addresses:

  1. BulletIntroduction to communicating with data models

  2. BulletThe benefits of modelling

Why did I make this video training?  In short, I was lucky, I was taught by someone who knew how to communicate using models and I inherited it.  Most data modellers I know were not so lucky - I hope these videos might redress the balance.

Time is one of the most difficult things to deal with when communicating using data models.  The best thing to do is remove it!

  1. BulletGetting rid of time!

Looks at types of data model, and focuses on conceptual models for business communication

  1. BulletConceptual, Logical, Physical models

  2. BulletCommunicating with models

Examples of things a conceptual model can be used for

  1. BulletConfirming and challenging understanding

  2. BulletDefining business performance measures

Requirements for modelling notation

  1. BulletSimple, uncluttered look

  2. BulletUnambiguous meaning

  3. BulletBusiness names only

How to “convert” an existing model so it is easier to communicate with business people

  1. BulletDe-clutter

  2. BulletRemove time

  3. BulletConvert names
